Cocktail Shaking

How to Shake a Cocktail with a Boston Shaker (Two Tins)

A Boston shaker uses two metal tins that seal together. Shaking does three things at once: it chills, dilutes, and aerates the drink—giving it a brighter flavor and a lighter, smoother texture.

What you need

  • Boston shaker tins (large tin + small tin)

  • Ice

  • A strainer (Hawthorne strainer and can use a fine mesh strainer in addition if double-straining)

The best pacing for hosting a group event is have everyone measure out all ingredients into larger tin, then together, get ice for small tin. Seal, and all shake together, then strain...this way everyone is finishing at the same time and can taste their drinks together.

Step-by-step: the method

1) Add ingredients

Per instructions, pour cocktail ingredients into the large tin first.

2) Add ice (more than you think)

Fill the small tin about 2/3 full of ice.

3) Seal the tins

Place the small tin on top at a slight angle so the rims overlap.
Give the top tin a firm tap with the heel of your hand to create a tight seal.

Tip: If it seals correctly, you’ll feel it “lock” into place.

4) Shake with confidence

Hold the shaker with two hands (one on each tin), small tin side always on top, and shake hard.

  • How long: about 10–15 seconds, can go as much as 30 in you really want to dilute a drink.

  • How to tell it’s ready: the tins should feel very cold and frosty, and the sound of the ice will soften slightly.

5) Break the seal

Set the shaker down and find the spot where the tins overlap.
Pinch the sides near the rim (not the center) to pop it open.

If it won’t open: run warm water over the outside of the larger tin for a second, then pinch/tap again. **If one is glass do not ever bang it on anything to open.

6) Strain and serve

Use your strainer and pour into your glass.
